Srimad Bhagavatham – Episode #5 – The greatness of Srimad Bhagavatham

Out of the eighteen puranas, Padma purana talks about the specialty of Srimad Bhagavatham. Firstly we will pay obeisance to Lord Sri Veda Vyasa and Sukamuni. Only if we worship them, what ever has been preached by them will be understood by us. It will also get reminded to us at the right time. It would also help us to make those teachings as a habit in our day to day life.

Now we are reaching a very special place called Naimisaranyam – Aranya means ‘forest’. Naimisaranya means a forest full of darbha grass. Alternatively, it can also be interpreted as Nimizham means time less than required for winking the eye. This can also be interpreted to mean that before one can even wink their eye, Sriman Narayanan had chased all raakshashas out of this place and protected the rishis doing penance in the forest.

It was in this special place that a rishi by the name of Sudhar well known for spreading the fame of puranaas was sitting. There was a rishi called Romaharshanar born to Brahma. He was a shishya to Veda Vyasar and was doing the kainkarya of spreading the fame of puraanas to the world. Sudhapouranikar was the sone of Romaharshanar and was also keenly performing the seva of spreading the puranaas to the world. All the disciples of Sudhapouranikar who was sitting around the rishi wanted to get some clarifications and hence raised questions: “This is now Kaliyuga! We are subjected to a lot of hardships in this! How can we get relieved from these troubles and get bliss. Sastras mention that we need to have gynana, bhakthi and vairagya to get true bliss. But in this Kaliyuga, it is very difficult to get these in Kaliyuga! In this background, is there an easier way to attain the lotus feet of Sri Krishna!” At that time, Sri Sudhapouranikar replied back to them “In Kaliyuga, there is one way out. If some one reads and puts in practice in day to day life complete affection and devotion to Sri Krishna as mentioned in Bhagavatha Purana, then the grace of Sri Hari falls on that person easily.

In a lot of places in our puranaas, things have been handed out to succeeding generations through questions and answers – shishyas(Disciples) asking questions to their guru and guru replying back with answers to the questions in a detailed manner – In this respect, we can possibly see how generally questions should be asked to elicit a special answer. While questions has to be preferably as general as possible, answers has to be special and preferably in detail. For e.g., to know if a person has gone to a place, we should not possibly try to ask the question with the name of place in it? “Did you go to Mumbai” is possibly a wrong question and it would be better to ask “Where did you go to?” in a generic manner. On the other hand, if we ask the question “You came back from Mumbai, right?”, the other person might just think that (s)he wants to hear the answer as “Yes. I came back from Mumbai” and would resort to answer it in that manner rather than the actual answer. So, if the question is generic and answer is specific and in detail, then it becomes a pleasure to listen to them. This becomes a discussion that has to be saved for posterity for future generations as well. This will generate upadeshas for all of us to benefit from. Sri Krishna and Arjuna was discussing and as part of that discussion was born Bhagavad Geeta. Bheeshmacharya and Yudhishtir had a discussion and it gave us the great Vishnu Sahasranamam. In Mahabharatha, Vidura and Dirutharashtra was discussing and it produced Vidura Needi! Examples like this can go on…

So, whenever mahaans discuss great dharmic thoughts and principles, we get invaluable lessons for us to incorporate and follow them in our life. Sudapouranikar now talks about an interesting story when he starts telling the story of Bhagavatha! Sukar is doing upadesha to Parikshit. At that time, all the devas having realized the greatness of Srimad Bhagavatha purana, approached Parikshit and tried to redirect his interest to other areas. They asked “We will give you amudha. In lieu of that, can you give us Srimad Bhagavatha Purana”. To this, Parikshit answered back “I know the difference between a diamond and a shining silver, between just a plain mirror and a rathina. You want to give me a plain mirror like amutha and want to take away from me a rathina like Srimad Bhagavatha Purana! I know the greatness of this puraana and do not want to trade it for anything lesser!”

Once upon a time, as a story goes, Brahma wanted to check up what is the best method to attain moksha. To do this, he kept a balance machine and placed on it all puranaas and methods to see which is more appropriate. On that weighing balance machine, after removing all other routes, it accepted only Bhagavatha Purana alone as the best method.

Narad muni did a paraayana of this Bhagavata puraana over a period of seven days and as a result there were a lot of benefits that came in from that. In the next episode, we will hear about the story of Narad muni doing the paraayana of this puraana over a period of 7 days.

Srimad Bhagavatham – Episode #4 – Bhagavatha parayaana procedure

King Parikshit grew and became a king. He ruled for a long time. One day, he went to a forest to hunt. At that time, in order to quench his thirst, he went to a ashrama of a rishi. But the rishi was in Yoga at that time and did not realize that the king had come in. Due to being thirsty for a long time, King Parikshit got angry and decided that the rishi had to be taught a lesson. He took a dead snake that was nearby with the tip of his arrow and put the dead snake on the neck of the rishi. With the satisfaction of having insulted the rishi, he left the ashrama.

After some time, the rishi’s son came in to the ashrama and observed the dead snake on his father’s neck. He got furious after seeing this and with avesha said “Who ever was responsible for doing this on my father – let that person be killed by a bite of a snake called dakshan in the seventh day from today”.

At around the same time it was happening in the forest, King Parikshit had reached his palace and suddenly realized after thinking that he should not have done such an unpardonable act. “I should not have done that – When some muni was in yoga, I should not have done something like this and insulted him. He is a gynani and there is no fault of his not to have seen me since he was in yoga”. He realized that he has committed a grave mistake and decided that he wants to end his life as a prayaschita through hunger. He spread darba on the ground on the banks of river Ganges and just sat down on that.

On one hand, the rishi kumara gave the saabha to King and on another hand, the king had decided to give his life after realizing the mistake that he had committed. At around the time, the rishi had opened his eyes and realized through gynana dhrishti what had happened and reprimanded his son “O my son! What kind of deed did you do? A king is a representative of Bhagwan. Since he is a king, getting angry is his characteristic. We are brahmins, and being rishis we should have controlled our anger. It was wrong on your part to have done the same thing as our king”.

We have to realize one of the facts here. If someone gets angry that we have a snake on our neck, is it not that our body is actually like a snake? So many poisons in this body is affecting us realize Sriman Narayana – What are these deadly poisons? Krodha, Cheatings of others, lying for self gratification etc. It is not going to affect much if a real snake which is dead is going to lie over a body that has so much of poisons inside like a real snake.

There is a small story on related lines. Once a very staunch devotee of Sri Venkatesa, was in Tirupati for a very long time doing the pushpak seva of creating a garden with different flowers. Daily he used to pluck the flowers, spin it into a garland and offered to the feet of Sri Venkatesa. One day, he was bit by a deadly posionous black snake. All the people surrounding him started giving him treatment for the same. He being a staunch devotee mentioned “Look, the snake which has bit me is running there. My body is the snake that has been bitten. Now this is going to be a competition between the snake that was bit and the snake that bit it. Let us see which one wins! If the snake that bit wins the race, then I will be freed of this snake (body) and hopefully will reach Vaikunta to serve my yejamaan there after crossing the viraja nadhi. If the snake that was bitten(my body) wins, then I will immediately go to the Koneri teertha near Varaha sannidi for taking bath, and after which I will offer flowers to the feet of Sri Venkatesa here and continue my seva here. Let us wait for the final result to see who wins between the two”. This is a perfect example of total detachment. If we get detached from the body, then we will end up getting the attachment to the Lotus feet of saakshath Sriman Narayana.

Parikshit, meanwhile had made all the arrangements to transfer the reins of his kingdom to his kith, on the banks of river Ganges started to sit down in penance in the presence of rishis. At that time, the parama gynani and son of Sri Veda Vyasar – Suka mahamuni – appeared there. Suka muni is someone who does not go and talk with others easily but always performing the manana of the para brahmam. Taking into account the current situation and the sudden appearance of this muni, King Parikshit was extremely happy and immdiately paid his obeisance to this great muni. Pariskhit said “O param gynani, You are the one with a total Brahma tejas on your face! You are the son of Sri Veda Vyasar! I am placing a very humble request in front of you now and kindly request you to guide me! I have wasted too much of my time till now not hearing and doing good deeds. I have a burning desire now to achieve one thing – I want to listen to the one thing in this world which will make it equal to have listened to all the good things in life! I want to see the one thing in this world which will make it equal to have seen all the good things in life! I want to understand the one thing in this world which will make it equal to have understood the supreme realization that a human being should realize! I very humbly request you to give me all this in the seven days of my balance life on this earth!” and pleaded with him in highest respect.

Now is this not the desire that we all harbor in a corner of all our hearts. It was all the design of Sriman Narayana through his sankalpa to make King Parikshit as a perfect nimitta on behalf of all of us. Because of this, we have one of the world’s greatest treasure as Srimad Bhagavatham. Hearing the plea of Parikshit, Suka muni smiled and mentioned “O King! Do not worry. You have seven days. That is too much of time to hear what is required for vaikunta praapthi.” and started reciting the Bhagavatha Purana. He completed it in seven days. After hearing this continuously for seven days, King Parikshit attained Moksha. Because of this, it has become a practice to recite Srimad Bhagavatham in seven days.

The following is the general procedure that is followed for the day wise contents when we do the sapthaha parayana of this Bhagavatham:

First day: From the first chapter, till the 3rd skantha where Manu Karthamaprajapathi discussion happens

Second day: Till the fifth skantha where we have the story abour jada bharatha

Third day: Completing the Narasimha avatara till the end of 7th skantha

Fourth day: Till the 10th skantha where the birth of Lord Sri Krishna happens

Fifth day: Till the completio of kalyaana with Rukmini devi in the 10th Skantha

Sixth day: Till the Hamsa avatara in the 11th Skantaa

Seventh day (Last): Till the thirteenth adhyaya of the 12th skantaa and completing the parayaana.

The above is what is generally referred as paraayana vidhi. If we do parayaana in this manner, there is no bliss in all the three worlds that will be out of our reach! We will be the recipient of all the pleasures of this world, wealth, aarogya, long healthy life, peace of mind. Most importantly, we will be having the most important benefit of reaching the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana. We have all been able to receive this bhaagya through the recitation of this Bhagavatha purana by Suka muni just for King Parikshit. In the next episode, we will look at how the mahatmiya of this puraana as mentioned in the Padma puraana.

    • @Vasan Bhaisahab !

Thanks for the new episodes on Srimad Bhagavatham . Very easy and yet strong rendering.

      Thanks and Regards,

  6. Gayatri mantra rushi is vishwamitra … Vishwamitra took LORD RAama to Seetadevi and married them …so it gives us the implication that if we do upasana of gayatri [ the gift of vishwamitra ] , the rishi will get us near to LORD as LORD RAAMA himself will come to us through rishi ie gayatri ..

DAshrath actually decided not to send RAAMA , he obstructed the going of RAAMA along with Vishwamitra yet RAAMA chose to go with Rishi ..

so even if our “DASHARATH ‘ the 10 indriyas pull mind in different directions and obstruct mind from concentrating one must choose to do GAYATRI … and Lord Raama will himself come to us ..

even of parents [ dashrath ] stop you from doing upasna one must do it ..

    Hare Srinivasa!!!

I have come across two slightly different approaches to doing
    Devara Pooja.

    1) Taking Nirmalya Teertha from previous day doing gopichandana
mudradharane, performing sandhya vandane and then starting Devara Pooja.

Doing Nirmalya Abhisheka, using today’s nirmalya teertha for gopichandana
mudradharane, performing sandhya vandane and then starting Devara Pooja.

    is the correct approach?

Also I have read conflicting opinions on whether
Garuda and Sesha pratimas are to be used for Devara Pooja. Please request
    Shrigalu to clarify.

    • first one is correct … previous days nirmalya / because devar pooja is done after the sandhyavandana and guru mantra japa …

garuda sesha are used in deva pooja as parivaar devata

Why god of bible is so cruel ?

This God, according to the Bible, is directly responsible for many mass-murders, rapes, pillage, plunder, slavery, child abuse and killing, not to mention the killing of unborn children. I have included references to the Biblical passages, so grab your Bible and follow along. You can also follow along with on-line Bibles such as BibleStudyTools.net or SkepticsAnnotatedBible.com.

It always amazes me how many times this God orders the killing of innocent people even after the Ten Commandments said “Thou shall not kill”. For example, God kills 70,000 innocent people because David ordered a census of the people (1 Chronicles 21). God also orders the destruction of 60 cities so that the Israelites can live there. He orders the killing of all the men, women, and children of each city, and the looting of all of value (Deuteronomy 3). He orders another attack and the killing of “all the living creatures of the city: men and women, young, and old, as well as oxen sheep, and asses” (Joshua 6). In Judges 21, He orders the murder of all the people of Jabesh-gilead, except for the virgin girls who were taken to be forcibly raped and married. When they wanted more virgins, God told them to hide alongside the road and when they saw a girl they liked, kidnap her and forcibly rape her and make her your wife! Just about every other page in the Old Testament has God killing somebody! In 2 Kings 10:18-27, God orders the murder of all the worshipers of a different god in their very own church! In total God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered.

The God of the Bible also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 and Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9).

so i belive hinduism is best religion and VISHNU IS REAL GOD

All teachings that go against truth taught by Vedas are for misleading ineligibles and daityas. Chiraan Guruji has told earlier that daityas (demons) are incapable of bringing up new teachings (study) by themselves. So Devatas have to be involved in this somehow. Nothing happens without the WILL of Shri Hari or Lord Vishnu. So this religion too must be His divine unbreakable Sankalpa (WILL) for some reason.

May be Chiraan Guruji may be kind enough to throw some light here. I have also requested Guruji earlier to teach us what is dharma? I even forgot the name of the text which Raghavendra Swamy authored to educate on what constitutes dharma. I think Guruji will write an exposition on this topic when he thinks we are eligible.

Any religion that teaches creation ex-nihilo has big problems as evil, sufferings and imperfections in this world cannot be explained away logically, since the locus of faults will finally rest in the creator. As western atheists (dissatisfied with their religions) say, “it is illogical to believe in a god who punishes his own creation”. Here creation implies creation-ex-nihilo, whatever your conception of the process of creation-ex-nihilo may be.

I just have some questions on nature of Bhagavan Guruji.

        1. We say there is no bheda between Bhagavan and His qualities. Does it mean His qualities are identical to Him in every way or is it only identical to Him in specific ways? Also please define what you mean His qualities?

        2. We say Bhagavan’s nama is different from Himself. Similarly, are Bhagavan’s Will, thoughts and actions different from Himself and different from each other as well?

        Please throw some light Guruji.

        Shri Krishnarpanamastu

thanks for the reply. yes ur right we need a lot of time for all this. i just replied coz i really enjoy ur posts. my post wasn’t perfect is clear by the fact that acharya didn’t reply. one cannot do any vada without serious training in tarka shastra…for that one needs to research many years granthas like nyaya sudha and khandan traya of vyasa tirtharu…..but let me tell you one thing all yatis of dvaita have cautioned us that version of tarka used today is faulty..so madhwa, tikacharya , vyasarayaru all have used BRAHMA TARKA in their works……first of all we must know why other matas are wrong only then we can deny their conclusions….its for the reason they have used wrong/tampered methods of interpretation itself. brahma tarka was written by lord vyasa himself as a supplement to brahma sutra but was lost in time. but it was there in acharya’s collection(library) is accepted today by many scholars……..saying this coz if we approach other with the notion that they might be right
inorder to pass a fair, unbiased judgment then its simply not possible coz kali has distorted not only shastras but even the tools applied to decipher shastras such as tarka, vyakarna, nirukta etc……so we must first of all be very stauch in our(dvaita) tenets……
